Her Website Was From 2012 and It Was Sending Referrals to Competitors
Dogwood Grooming Studio — Asheville, NC
Before
After
Dogwood Grooming Studio has been open in Asheville for 12 years. Karen has a loyal client base built entirely on word-of-mouth — people love her work, they tell their friends, those friends book. She never needed a website to get clients.
But she had a website. It was built in 2012, and it was actively working against her.
What Was Happening
Here's the path a typical new client takes: someone asks their friend for a groomer recommendation. The friend says "Dogwood Grooming, Karen is great." The person goes home and Googles "Dogwood Grooming Studio Asheville." They find the site.
And the site looked like it was built in 2012 — because it was. No HTTPS (browsers showed a "Not Secure" warning). Not mobile responsive (the text was tiny on a phone, you had to pinch and zoom). The hero image was a stock photo of a golden retriever that had nothing to do with Karen or her salon. The only photo of the actual salon was a low-resolution shot of the exterior. No prices, no services list, no reviews, no booking — just a phone number in the footer and an "About" page.
People who were already referred — people who wanted to book — were seeing this site and second-guessing the recommendation. Some of them Googled "dog groomer Asheville" instead and booked with whoever had a professional-looking site. Karen was losing clients she'd already been referred, and she didn't know it.
What We Did
We rebuilt the site around one principle: make it as easy as possible for a referred client to confirm their decision and book.
- Her real photos. Karen takes beautiful photos of her work. We put them everywhere — hero image, gallery page, scattered throughout the services page. People should see what they're getting.
- Services with prices. Every service listed, every price shown. Full groom, bath and brush, nail trim, teeth cleaning, de-shedding, puppy's first groom — all with what's included and what it costs by size. No "call for pricing."
- Online booking. Karen uses PetExec for scheduling. We added a "Book Now" button that links directly to her PetExec online booking page. No account creation, no app download — click, pick a time, done.
- Google reviews on the homepage. She had 84 reviews with a 4.8 average. Her old site didn't mention them at all. Now the first thing you see after the hero image is "4.8 stars from 84 reviews" with the three most recent reviews displayed.
- HTTPS. No more "Not Secure" warning. This alone may have been costing her bookings — Chrome shows that warning prominently and some people won't enter information on a site without it.
What Changed
Monthly visits doubled from 156 to 310. Average time on site went from 38 seconds to over two minutes. Pages per session went from 1.2 to 3.4 — people were actually looking at services, checking prices, browsing the gallery.
The biggest impact: 34% of appointments now come through online booking. Karen didn't lose any phone bookings — these are additional bookings from people who prefer to book online, especially after hours. She estimates it saves her 45 minutes a day in phone scheduling.
Karen's grooming was never the problem. Her reputation was never the problem. The problem was that the one piece of the process she could control — the website — was undermining everything else. Word-of-mouth got people to Google her name. The old website talked them out of booking. The new one confirms they made the right call and lets them book before they change their mind.
